5 Key Strategies to Overcome Self-Sabotage

At Minds on Purpose we often see clients come to us that are struggling with Self sabotage.
Self-sabotage can be a significant barrier to achieving our goals and living a fulfilling life. It's a pattern of behaviour where we actively or passively prevent ourselves from reaching our objectives. However, with awareness and the right strategies, we can set a path to overcome this self-defeating behaviour.

Here are five key tips to help you stop self-sabotage in its tracks:

  1. Cultivate Self-Awareness Recognise and understand your patterns of self-sabotage. Reflect on past experiences where you've held yourself back and identify the triggers that lead to such behaviour. This process sounds much easier than it is right! You may be consciously aware of some of these; however many are hidden deep in our subconscious, and it may be useful to engage the help of a coach or therapist to help if you struggle in identifying these.
  2. Challenge Negative Beliefs Often, self-sabotage stems from deep-seated negative beliefs about ourselves. Work on recognising these beliefs and challenge them with evidence that supports your capabilities and worth3.
  3. Set Realistic Goals Sometimes, we set ourselves up for failure by aiming for unattainable goals. Break down your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks that you can achieve step by step3.
  4. Practice Self-Compassion Be kind to yourself. Understand that everyone makes mistakes and that it's a natural part of the growth process. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a good friend2.
  5. Seek Support Don't hesitate to reach out for help. Talk to friends, family, or professionals who can provide guidance and support as you work through your self-sabotaging patterns3.

Remember, overcoming self-sabotage is a journey. It requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to explore and understand yourself better. Strategies like these are a great way to start moving towards a more positive and self-affirming way of life.
